Mumbai is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharastra. It is the second most populous city in the world. It has been formerly known as Bombay. The city has an estimated population of 13 million as of 2001 census. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India. It is one of the world’s top ten centers of commercial department. The name was officially changed to Mumbai in 1995. The name Bombay was derived from Bom Bahia (the good bay) a name given by Portuguese sailor Francis Almedia in 1508. The literacy rate of Mumbai is 85.6% (female 85.7%, male: 90%). Mumbaikar or bombaite is the term used for the inhabitants of Mumbai. It covers an area of 437.71 sq km. Mumbai has various communities, different religions and customs. Religion plays an important role in this city. Hinduism is the major religion. The other religions are Muslims, Christians and Jains. Marathi is the official language. There are also many other languages spoken over here. Mumbaiya or bambaiya is the slang language of mumbaikars. South Indian and Chinese food is very popular in this city. Tea is the most popular beverage followed by coffee. It includes fruit juices and coconut water.
The city possesses various cinema theatres and art galleries. The city of Mumbai is home to many well known Indian poets. There are various amusement places over the city. Mumbai is connected to other parts of India by train, road and water. Public bus services are run by government. The Mumbai suburban railway was founded in 1847. It provides the number of train to reach local areas and other places of India. The international airport is at Sahar. The domestic airport is located at Santacruz. Mumbai lies at the mouth of Ulhas River off the western coast of India, in the coastal region known as the konkan. Much of Mumbai is just above a sea level. Its height is hardly above 10 to 15 about sea level. There are four rivers flow through Mumbai. In Mumbai city, the average maximum temperature is 31.2celsius and average minimum temperature is 23.7celsius. the average total rainfall of the city is 2146.6 mm. the climate of the Mumbai is tropical maritime. There are many historical religious tourist places in Mumbai. The main spots are Haji Ali, Mount Mary Church, Babulnath temple, ISKCON, Esselword entertainment park, Tulsi and Vihar lakes, Gateway of India, Western Railway Headquarters, Shivaji Park; Andheri sports complex, SNDT grounds, Taraporewala aquarium and much more. |
