Mumbai is the capital city of the Indian state of Maharastra. It is the second most populous city in the world. It has been formerly known as Bombay. The city has an estimated population of 13 million as of 2001 census. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India. It is one of the world’s top ten centers of commercial department. The name was officially changed to Mumbai in 1995. The name Bombay was derived from Bom Bahia (the good bay) a name given by Portuguese sailor Francis Almedia in 1508. The literacy rate of Mumbai is 85.6% (female 85.7%, male: 90%). Mumbaikar or bombaite is the term used for the inhabitants of Mumbai. It covers an area of 437.71 sq km.

Mumbai is connected to other parts of India by train, road and water. Public bus services are run by government. The Mumbai suburban railway was founded in 1847. It provides the number of train to reach local areas and other places of India. The international airport is at Sahar. The domestic airport is located at Santacruz.
Mumbai lies at the mouth of Ulhas River off the western coast of India, in the coastal region known as the konkan. Much of Mumbai is just above a sea level.
