Chennai is the capital of the Indian state of Tamilnadu. It is the fourth largest metropolitan city in India. Chennai is located on the coromendal coast of the Bay of Bengal. The total population of this metropolitan city is 7.5 million. It is formerly known as madras. The majority of the people are Tamilians. Tamil is the primary language spoken in Chennai. A resident of Chennai is called a chennaite. People who belong to other state also reside over here. According to the 2001 census, Hindus were about 82.27%, Muslims (8.37%), Christians (7.63%) and Janis (1.05%).
Chennai was established in the 17th century by the British. The British called it Chennnaipatinam after their victories from Chennapa Nayakar. Later, it is renamed as Chennai in 1996. It has been ruled by south Indian dynasties, the Pallavas, the Cholas, the Pandya, and the Vijayanagar. Now, Chennai city is governed by the corporation of Chennai consisting of 155 councilors who represent 155 wards and are directly elected by the city’s residents.
Chennai is divided in to four parts: north, central, south and west. North Chennai is indulged in industrial sectors. Central Chennai stands for commercial parts and business lines. South and west part of Chennai is occupied with the information technology concerns, residential and call centers. It stretches nearly 25.60 km. It is bounded on the east by Bay of Bengal and on the remaining three sides by Chengalpattu and Thiruvalluvar districts. Chennai is big trade centre.
Chennai is well connected to other parts of the state by road and train. There are five major national highways towards Mumbai, kolkata, Trichy, Thiruvalluvar and Pondichery. The Chennai mofusil bus terminus (CMBT) is the largest bus station in India. Chennai has two main railway stations. They are Chennai central station and Chennai Egmore. Chennai central station provides train to travel across India and Chennai Egmore to journey within Tamilnadu. The city has two major ports namely Chennai port and Ennore port.
The city is intersected by two languid streams, the Cooum and the Adayar. The Buckingham canal which runs through the states of Tamilnadu and Andhra Pradesh is a navigation canal. Chennai’s economy has a broad opening in the automobile, technology, hardware, manufacturing and health care industries.
Chennai stands for its culture education, sports, media and like. The city is famous for its dance shows and Hindu temples. It has also number of mosques and churches. All the major festival like Deepavali, Eid and Christmas are celebrated over here. The main food of this city is pongal, dosai, idli, vadai, vegetarian and non vegetarian dishes.
There are certain places to be enjoyed in Chennai. They are Connemara library, Eliots beach, Breezy Beate, Fort St.George, Government Museums, Guindy National Park, Marina Beach, Guindy Snake Park, Vandalur zoo and more.
